COVID-19 Support

Lifestyle Medicine adds tremendous value to traditional methods of healthcare intervention by focusing on preventing, reversing and treating a variety of health related conditions. It is the therapeutic use of evidence-based lifestyle interventions to help individuals improve on nutrition uptake, physical activity, quality sleep, stress management, mental health and purposeful living.

An occupational therapist will coach and empower you with the knowledge, skills, tools and confidence to become an active participant in your health and well-being. Together in a one-to-one setting, we will get to the root cause of what you are experiencing and by the end of the consultation, we will have a plan to help address health concerns adopting a holistic and functional approach.

COVID Psychological First Aid support

Initially developed by the Wold Health Organization, Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-based framework for offering humane, supportive and practical help to fellow human beings suffering serious crisis events. PFA is endorsed by many international agencies as an effective way to support people in the immediate aftermath of extremely stressful events.

Through one or more PFA sessions, a counselor will provide you with information on common responses to difficult experiences and assess if you may require additional healthcare support. PFA is delivered remotely via a online zoom consultation or one-to-one from BioSpa Health & Wellness Lab in Johannesburg, South Africa.

What is self-care

Self-care for professionals is about actively looking after your own health and wellbeing so that you can more effectively support those you work and live with. The concept of self-care is similar to the safety procedures on an aircraft: "In the unlikely event of an emergency, fit your own oxygen mask first, before attending to others". By putting yourself first you can, more effectively, help your loved ones or those in need.

Why practice self-care

In the course of our lives and doing our work we are often confronted by the more challenging aspects of life. We are asked to ‘do more with less’, and to work within difficult situations. Working with people going through tough times and with colleagues, who may also be stressed, can test our patience and push us to our limits. Practising self-care is an important professional development activity that will help you to cognitively, physically and emotionally ‘bounce back’ each day over the long term.

What does self-care look like

  • Engaging in activities and practices that improve your health, give you energy, lower your stress and contribute to your wellbeing such as exercising regularly, eat and hydrate correctly, adopt a super nutritional supplement as preventive maintenance for your body. Self-care activities differ for everyone.

  • Practise these activities regularly before the crisis hits, make it your lifestyle.

  • Manage your stresses, this ensures physical and emotional wellbeing is enhanced. The morbidity and mortality due to stress-related illness is alarming.

  • Adopt a self-care lifestyle to improve health and wellbeing for today and into the future.

Self-care is a daily lifestyle activity.

Self-care takes practice, like athletes training for a sport. In order for them to be at their best, they require a holistic approach to training throughout the week and even in the off-season. Self-care for the individual includes many of the same activities like fueling the body with the correct nutrition and hydrating correctly, getting enough sleep, managing stress, exercising regularly and maintaining a balanced pH level within the body. Self-care should be practiced in all aspects of life to perform at your best when working with people. A good place to start is with assessing where you’re at and then making a plan to improve your self-care.
