Tongue health diagnosis is a method used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is considered a pillar of diagnosis because it provides clearly visible clues to a patient’s pattern of disease. In TCM, it is established that four parts of the tongue correspond to different internal organs. The tongue has many relationships and connections in the body meridians and the internal organs. It can present strong visual indicators of a person's overall health. The tip of the tongue reflects the heart and lungs; The middle part of the tongue represents the spleen and stomach; The root of the tongue corresponds to the kidneys; Both sides of the tongue constitute the liver and gall-bladder. By analyzing these features, we are able to have a better understanding of the patient’s state of health, and whether organs are functioning normally. Observation of the tongue status starts with the visible abnormality, which accordingly becomes the basis for pattern identification/syndrome differentiation of pathological processes in the organs and tissues.
